How to Pot an Artificial Plant
Share
Artificial plants are a great choice you're wanting to transform your home into an urban jungle without the fuss of keeping lots of different plants alive. However, most artificial plants arrive in plain plastic pots designed for stability during shipping rather than as a means for decor, so repotting your artificial plant into a larger, more attractive container will not only enhance its appearance but also make it more realistic. This simple guide will show you how to get your artificial plant into a new pot using simple materials to achieve a natural effect.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before starting, gather some/all of the following:
- A decorative pot (ensure it’s larger than the pot attached to your plant).
- Real soil, coconut fibre soil, moss, pebbles, or decorative stones (optional).
- Packing materials (like cardboard, bubble wrap or foam packing, if needed for stability).
- Scissors or wire cutters (if trimming is needed).
- Gloves (if working with soil or moss).
Step 2: Choosing the Right Pot
Select a pot that complements your space and fits the style of your artificial plant. Consider size and depth - choose a pot at least 2-3 inches (5-8cm) wider in diameter than the original pot to create a balanced look. Luckily, you won't need any drainage holes... so feel free to go with whatever aesthetic you prefer.
Step 3: Preparing the Base
To prevent the small base of the artificial plant from moving around inside the larger decorative pot, it's a great idea to pack the bottom of the new pot with a filler material such as crumpled paper, folded cardboard, foam, or small pieces of polystyrene. This keeps the overall weight down and raises the plant to the desired height in the decorative pot.
Step 4: Secure the Artificial Plant
Pop the small pot of the artificial plant into the centre of the decorative pot. If the plant wobbles or feels unstable, pack foam or crumpled paper tightly around the sides of the small pot. Ensure the plant stands upright and remains securely in place.
Step 5: Add Your Top Layer
Using Soil or Coconut Fibre Soil: Cover the top of the filler or small pot with your soil of choice. Spread it evenly, leaving no gaps around the plant base. Real soil adds weight and gives the plant a more authentic look but can be messy if disturbed - if you've got pets you should probably avoid this option!
Using Moss: Lay preserved or faux moss around the plant base. Moss provides a soft, lush look and is ideal for decorative settings.
Using Stones or Pebbles: For a modern touch, top the base with decorative stones or pebbles. Choose colours that complement your plant and pot.
Mix and match these options for a more nuanced and natural look.
Step 6: Final Adjustments
Once the top layer is in place, gently fluff or adjust the artificial foliage to make it look as lifelike as possible. Some plants have bendable stems or branches, allowing you to shape them into a fuller, more natural appearance. If necessary, trim any excess foliage or stems with scissors or wire cutters.
Step 7: Maintenance Tips
- Regularly dust the leaves of your artificial plant with a soft cloth or a feather duster to keep it looking stunning.
- If you used real soil, avoid overwatering nearby plants that might splash onto the faux arrangement.
- Rearrange or update the top layer periodically to keep your display looking its best.
By following these simple steps and potting your faux foliage in a stylish container with natural-looking materials, you can ensure it blends seamlessly with your décor, creating the illusion of a thriving, well-tended plant. 🌱
