Caring for Your Canvas Art

Caring for Your Canvas Art

To keep your canvas looking sharp for years to come, proper care is essential. Whether it's one of our surrealist scenes, minimalist illustrations, or something entirely different (boo 😜), this guide will help you preserve its quality for the long haul! 🌿

1. Location Location Location

Where you place your canvas artwork will play a significant role in its lifespan. Here are a few factors to consider:

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause colours to fade and weaken the material over time. Try to position your canvas in an area with indirect light or use UV blocking window treatments if you're feeling extra.
  • Control Humidity Levels: Excessive moisture can lead to warping or mould growth. Aim to keep your canvas in a space with stable humidity, ideally between 40-60%. Bathrooms or kitchens with poor ventilation tend to not be the best spots.
  • Steer Clear of Heat Sources: Avoid placing your canvas near radiators, fireplaces, heaters or AC units as temperature fluctuations can damage the material.

2. Keep It Clean

Regular cleaning is essential for maintaining your canvas’s appearance, but it requires a delicate touch to keep it fresh:

  • Dust Gently: Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust from the surface of the canvas. Avoid using feather dusters, which can snag the fabric or leave debris.
  • Spot Clean Carefully: If your canvas gets a smudge, dampen a clean cloth with distilled water and gently dab (never rub) the area. Avoid using cleaning solutions, as they may damage the print or alter the colours.
  • Protect Against Dirt: If you live in a cosier space (think narrow corridors) or have pets, consider placing the canvas higher on the wall to minimise accidental contact.

3. Mount Up

While our canvas artworks come ready to hang, you can absolutely enhance its presentation with a frame if that's your thing! Here’s how to get it spot on:

  • Use Acid-Free Materials: Ensure that the materials (e.g. mat board or backing board) are acid-free to prevent discolouration.
  • Handle with Gloves: When handling the canvas, use clean gloves or wash your hands thoroughly to avoid transferring oils or dirt from your hands onto the artwork.
  • Secure Properly: Use appropriate mounting hardware that evenly supports the canvas and prevents sagging.

4. Long Term Protection

To ensure your canvas art stays vibrant and intact, consider these protective measures:

  • Sealants and Coatings: While Plantish canvases are finished to enhance their durability, you can opt to apply a UV-resistant spray sealant for added protection. Always test a small corner first to ensure compatibility.
  • Rotate Placement: If you have multiple artworks, consider rotating their locations periodically to prevent uneven exposure to light and environmental conditions.
  • Keep Away from Sharp Objects: Be mindful of items near your canvas, such as furniture edges or tools which could accidentally damage the surface.

By following these tips you'll be well on your way to keeping your canvas looking gorgeous - who knows, maybe it'll be a future family heirloom! ✨
